Just after sunrise on the morning of January 3, 2001, the body of the dead female transient
killer whale CA189 was grounded in the shallow, marshy waters east of Dungeness Spit. The
body was originally located the day before by staff of the Center for Whale Research (aboard
a KING5-TV helicopter) and was secured by staff from the National Marine Fisheries Service.
