Encounter #01
February 3, 2008 J pod Platform: Peregrine Departed Snug Harbor: 10:00 a.m. Begin Encounter: 10:45 a.m. Start Lat: 48° 51.05 N Start Long: 123° 20.04 W End Encounter: 11:30 a.m. End Lat: 48° 51.58 N End Long: 123° 19.95 W
Observers: Dave Ellifrit and Jim Maya.
Superbowl Sunday morning Ken Balcomb received a report from Orca Network of whales off Mouat Pt. in Swanson Channel heading north. Ken called Jim Maya and arranged for Dave Ellifrit to meet Jim aboard the Pregrine at Snug Harbor. Dave and Jim located J-pod heading north in northern Swanson Channel (in the Navy Channel area) pretty spread out in singles and small groups. The whales displayed a moderate bit of percussive and social stuff. J27, J30, and J34 were fired up and rough housing. J19 in another loose group threw a couple of cartwheels. The J16's were tight and cruising at the surface with some rolling and taillobs. Dave and Jim then went up towards the entrance to Active Pass to make sure no one had gotten by them. The spread out groups started to funnel in toward the pass and they all came together as they charged into Active Pass. They slowed down once inside and gave the observers a nice lineup for proof of presence photos.
