J, K and some members of L pod were encountered off the west side of San Juan Island at 10:33 a.m., August 31, 2008. The whales were spread out in groups and traveling slowly south. All of J pod was documented, and most of K pod as well as the L26's, L4's, some of the L47's, and a few others. Center staff also sighted a minke close to shore near Kanaka Bay. The encounter ended at 2:33 p.m. just off Hannah Heights. The whales continued milling and traveling southward.
