Dave Ellifrit, Emma Foster and Erin Heydenreich on the vessel Orca and Ken Balcomb on the vessel Shachi encountered L's off Hannah Heights on the west side of San Juan Island at 1:45 p.m. The whales were in tight groups traveling south. Five L pod matrilines were encountered: the L4's, L7's, L26's, L43's, and the L47's , consisting of 20 whales. The whales gathered into a tight group and started traveling south west off the south end of False Bay. The encouter ended there at 3:00 p.m.
