Encounter # 56 • November 11 • J and K pods

Encounter 56 was conducted by Mark Malleson with K and J whales spread out near the Victoria waterfront on 11 November 2009. The high point was the photo-documentation of J46, a new calf of J28. The whales came from the direction of Haro Strait and headed west in the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the evening. They apparently headed east again during the night and went to Puget Sound. One of the young males checked out the surf from the bow of bulk carrier "Ocean Lyra", but did not ride.
