Welcome to the J1 yearbook!
On this page are the catalogue ID photographs of J1 from the begenning of the Orca Survey study in 1976 until the last year he was photographed in 2010.
In some years we are missing either the right or the left side, but we do have a photograph for every year he was alive during the stude period.

Please support Orca Survey project continue to track the southern residents throughtout their lives. The valuable information we gather from photo-id studies helps to conserve the southern resident killer whale population. All donations go directly to continuing our long-term study of the Southern Resident Orcas of Washington State and southern British Columbia.

J11976

These photographs were taken the first year of the Orca Survey study in 1976. J1 was the first southern resident killer whale to be given an alpha numeric desigination. Also known as Ruffles, because of his wavy dorsal fin, J1 was a mature adult male when this phograph was taken. Because of the size of his fin, he was estimated to be at least 25 at the time. His estimated age would have made him 60 this year. His exact age and lineage are unknown.
